Copyright
Copyright is a legal term which defines intellectual property and the creator or author of the work, or the designated copyright holder, has the actual “right to copy” or ownership of the said original work, for the by stipulations of the law defined and designated time duration. Similar to a trademark or maybe a patent, this right was employed to help the author or creator of an original work protect his ownership of the said work and before I lose myself in the legal mumbo jumbo, let us simply observe what copyright actually does. The basic idea was that everyone who creates a work of art, writes a book, composes a song, writes a poem or lyrics, anything of the kind and similar, must have the possibility to keep the rights to that achievement and exploit that talent and the associated work. Nowadays, this copyright became a part of the popular culture because of the Internet and the associated music downloads with services like Napster that committed copyright infringement and were therewith deemed illegal. Although the straight out definition what is actually illegal and what not has not be as clearly defined as the copyright holders would like them to, but bottom line is that unauthorized copying and distributing of copyrighted material is prohibited. The interesting thing is that as copyrighted is viewed anything that has been put to paper, recorded, composed, created, made, invented or otherwise defined by author or creator and that the copyright starts with that very moment, not with the actual time when the work has been registered with a copyright office. According to the international law regulations, copyright does not have to be registered with any official office in order to be valid, but some proof of copyright is necessary. For instance, musicians who compose music that is not registered or publicly played anywhere, record the music on a tape or CD and seal it in an envelope and send it by registered mail to themselves. Similar solutions for all kind of work are applicable, some attorneys offer solutions that may be too complicated and expensive. Copyright is supposed to be simple. It’s not expected that creative minds develop a lawyer mentality, that would probably make them unproductive anyway, but they should be able to concentrate on art and creating the works to be copyrighted and not spend time in courts. Unfortunately, the 50% of world’s lawyers are living in the United States, where most of copyright is being registered, and these lawyers make sure they have something to do, unnecessarily complicating pretty straight forward regulations.
